ELEMENTS MAGAZINE ILLUSTRATION

Elements magazine is a research-focused editorial magazine put out by the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University. The 2021 issue featured a story talking about the researchers solving mysteries from hundreds of thousands of years ago. The client wanted this illustration to have a film noir feel, like a gumshoe detective was the one solving the mysteries. Items on and around the desk would resemble the tools used by real researchers, like ice cores, microscopes, and Ipads. While they wanted the whole spread to be an illustration, it also needed to allow for room for the text. My solution was to include elements within the illustration that the text could sit inside, like the screen of the Ipad or papers on the bulletin board.

The cover of the magazine also needed to feature this illustration, but it needed to be reworked to give hierarchy to the name of the magazine, and not include the text blurbs from the main story spread. I primarily used Adobe Photoshop to create the illustration, and then added all text elements with Adobe InDesign.
